In this blog post, I want to share how to use two foundational practices— giving offerings and asking permission—because they are key to honoring relationship with nature and lands. These protocols will also awaken deeper connection with nature. Whether you are getting to know the fairies in your backyard garden, walking in the forest to see a waterfall, or making a pilgrimage to a sacred rock, these two practices will vastly expand your relationship with the nature spirits and ancestors of land, help you open to the multidimensionality of Mother Earth, and will keep you grounded and safe.
A Meditation on The Land
At Catherine Creek, I sprinkled an offering of dried rose petals, lavender, and mica at the natural entrance where the path funnels downward. I gave the offerings with gratitude in my heart for the beautiful land. It feels important to me to make a deeper connection with the sacred spirits of the land before walking to the powerful arch.
I asked the guardian of the land for permission to enter this sacred place and opened my perception. A spirit being come forward and swept his hand in an inviting and welcoming gesture. The guardian ushered me into the beauty and magic of the land as we entered an expansive dimensional experience.
Whenever I returned to this land, I made an offering at this same location and was always welcomed by the same spirit. The spirit knew who I was and was always welcoming and honoring of my presence. Catherine Creek became a power spot for me and many others who journeyed there with me.
How to Make an Offering
Offerings are a gift of love of love and appreciation you make to nurture the spirit of the land. There are many forms of offerings: a pinch of tobacco, corn meal, dried lavender, mica, honey, a quartz crystal, cedar, rose petals, songs. I like to gather and make an offering mix to carry with me when I journey on land.
Place, sprinkle, give some of the offering to the land at the entrance area by holding it next to your heart. Pour love and gratitude into the offering and then place it on the earth.
How to Ask Permission
While making an offering, I ask for permission to come to this land and work with the beneficial spirits and energies that are present here. Open to receiving an answer. You may simply feel good, or a sense of an invitation, or hear an audible “yes.” Say, “thank you” and enter the magic.
When I leave the land, I say “good bye” and “thank you” and often leave an offering as I exit to land. This reminds me to release my connection to the spirits. “Thank you for your welcome. I release my connection until I return to these lands.”
Practicing these two land protocols will transform your relationship to the land and yourself. Once you’ve mastered these practices, you will integrate and embody them. At that point, your presence becomes an offering itself. Your spiritual alignment opens an invitation and permission to continually dance with Creation. Your intuition will guide you on your way.
